President Elect ObamaWednesday 05 Nov 2008 Senator Barack Obama has become the first African American to be elected President of the United States of America; an amazing achievement that will have political pundits talking for many weeks, even years to come. Undoubtedly, Senator Obama charmed the American people with his eloquence and general good nature. He is clearly a very likeable person. His campaign was also nothing short of masterful. Unfortunately, eloquence, charm, and even the mastery of politics does not guarantee America or the World that President elect, Obama will be a success. That challenge is now before him at a very demanding time in history. His youth and inexperience will be surely tested. All that we can do at this time is to wait and see; and wish him well and pray that he represents the aspirations of all of America and the freedom loving people of the World. Undoubtedly, President elect Obama’s biggest challenge, if he is to represent all American’s will be to control the urge to capitalize on the size of the left-leaning Democrat Party’s victory. With control now of all three levels of government, the fear among Republicans and conservatives alike is that legislation will be pushed through by the Democrat majority that will take America closer to Socialism than it has ever been. This would not be good for America or the World that has come to rely on the entrepreneurial spirit of free enterprise. Senator John McCain was gracious in defeat. It also has to be acknowledged that he made an incredible contribution to keeping the Republican Party in the race at a time when the mood of the country was clearly against them. Although soundly defeated, the Grand Old Party has not been humiliated and has a platform from which to rebuild, as it must. Governor Sarah Palin showed that despite this loss by the Republicans, that there is still life and hope in the GOP. The challenge now for Governor Palin is to stay in the public eye. There is no doubt that she has the political skills to be a serious candidate for the presidency in 2012. However, she must gain greater public exposure between now and then. One can only wonder at how she will achieve this between now and then. It will be an interesting aspect of political life in America to watch, in the next four years. Regardless of how one voted yesterday, Christians everywhere will be delighted that it appears that Americans are still in favor of the traditional meaning of marriage. It appears, although still to be confirmed, that all the ballot initiates to ban gay marriage were successful. When we say this, and for those who applaud this result, at the same time our thoughts and our prayers must go out to those gay couples who wanted the outcome to be different. Their situation is not easy and lawmakers and the church need to do more to explain and encourage their civil union rights. Gay people also need to understand the importance of this issue to traditional society and realize that it is not personal, but a matter of grave concern for what destruction of the traditional meaning of marriage will mean for human society.
