Hijacking Capitalism

Monday 27 Oct 2008

“Go Joe!”

An unhealthy combination of big business and big government has hijacked capitalism and once again the over-lords of the global financial world that they have created have proven that they do not understand the basic fundamentals of a free market economy – or worse still, maybe they do not even care.  All they seem to worry about is making a “quick buck” and getting out as fast as they can – with no accountability.

What “they” did to the administration of Ronald Regan with the Savings and Loans fiasco, they have now done to George W. Bush with this Fannie and Freddie fiasco – and inch by inch; centimeter by centimeter; step b y step; by design or otherwise, they have moved the frustrated world closer and closer towards Socialism that can only result in a severe right wing backlash that will ultimately hurt many, many more millions.  The cycle is so obvious it ought to be worrying good people everywhere.

The Cause

Bottom line: the cause of the current financial crisis is that big, out-of-control (power drunk – left leaning) government pushed/encouraged big business (in the form of banks and Wall Street financiers) to make unviable loans to people who could not afford them, for political purposes.  Wall Street obliged and, in customary fashion, spread the stupidity like a computer virus.  Soon, obviously without thinking or caring about the consequences, the world’s banking and financial system was involved; underwriting the silliness; buying into loans and related financial instruments that anyone with an ounce of financial nous should have known: could not deliver.  But as we have seen in the past; and no doubt we will see again in the future, there will be no shortage of lemmings in the world, while this thinking is allowed to rule.

A Christian Issue

How is this a Christian issue, you ask?  Quite simply because Christians are people too; and we are all in this rickety boat together.  Moreover however, the free world owes everything it has to Jesus Christ.  Take Jesus out of history and there is no Wall Street; no Free World; and no Free Market economy as we call it.  Although most in the world have conveniently forgotten as they have rewritten history to suit their destructive purposes; the founding fathers of this modern Free Market world, we’re all Christians.  They were driven to create this incredibly rewarding world by a desire to get away from big government and big business corruption.

This is why the “Pilgrims” left everything they had behind; got onto the Mayflower and went to America. This is what the “Boston Tea Party” was all about.  This is why millions have packed up and left Europe in the past 100 years.  This is why the brains of Germany went to America in the 1930s and 40s; they did not run to Russia.  This is why the entrepreneurial free enterprise class has run away from Socialism and Communism in Russia and China, and elsewhere, at every opportunity they have been given.  This is why good people are still flocking out of Central and South America; and the Caribbean today; taking incredible risks; overcoming great hardships, just to get a shot at the American dream of freedom.  The only ones going the other way are people trying to hide from the law.

There is no escaping our responsibility therefore; if Christians will not stand up and defend our blessing and inheritance: who will?

Fraudulent Activity

What has now happened to the world economy is not Christian and, any Christian who has been involved in causing this crisis ought to be ashamed of their lack of stewardship of the public purse and the public trust that they have been given.  True, we all make mistakes; but what has now happened to the world economy is the result of more than a simple, stupid mistake: it is outright fraudulent; at least as bad as what the principles of Enron and WorldCom went to jail for.

Biblical Guidance

Where does the Bible speak about our responsibility in a situation like this, you ask?  Read the parable of the talents in the gospels of Matthew and Luke and you will see that the message and our responsibility are very clear.

In the gospel of Luke, speaking in a parable, Jesus said: “A certain nobleman (meaning Himself) went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.  And He called His ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy (this economy) till I come back.  But His citizens hated Him (as many hate Jesus in the world today), and they sent a message after Him, saying: We will not have this man to reign over us.”

But, much to their surprise, the man they hated came back; stronger than ever.  And what did He do when He saw what they had done with the economy that He had left them? He said that, “unto every one which hath (been true) shall be given; and from him that hath not (been true), even that he hath shall be taken away from him.  And those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.” (Luke 9: 12-27)  In the gospel of Matthew He says:  “Cast the unfaithful servant into outer darkness.” So much for “Gentle Jesus, meek and mild”!

The Solution – Go Joe!

What then is the solution? We need to get back to basics. Good people need to take back their blessing and accept their responsibility.  Like Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher of Ohio, better known on the current US presidential campaign trail as 'Joe the Plumber’, who says he is now considering a run for Congress in 2010, we all need to get more involved.

It does not matter whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, you have to accept that, as a Christian, you have a responsibility, before all else, to God, to defend the truth.  Otherwise, you are only fooling yourself, if you think that you will escape His wrath.

I will “give to everyman according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings,” (Jeremiah 17: 10) the Lord said to the prophet Jeremiah.  “Everyone shall die for his own iniquity (mistakes = sins).” (Jeremiah 31: 30)

“The Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father (God) with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to His works,” (Matthew 16: 27) Jesus says in the Gospel of Matthew.   “With what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matthew 7: 2)

There is no escaping our individual, personal responsibility in this life.
