Fighting Back

Sunday 09 Nov 2008

As discussed in our previous editorial, the trashing of Governor Sarah Palin has begun. She is now squarely in the cross hairs of the political character assassins who are letting her have it; all barrels are blazing; and the attack will not stop until Governor Palin’s potential as a political candidate is utterly destroyed; or the people stand up and say, enough is enough.

Many will probably ask: why are we dragging this issue out? Why are we persisting with this issue?  Because, in the War of Ideas that is raging throughout the world, this is a mission critical issue.  Unless you are committed to a one party system, you will know that it is critically important to the survival of Western democracy that we have fair and open elections; that ordinary people like Governor Palin are able to viably compete in the democratic process, without fear of being personally destroyed by the system that is supposed to serve their interests.  The day that this is no longer possible; when good people are afraid to participate in the political process; when the price becomes too high for ordinary people to pay; that is the day that Western democracy dies and the Free World as we know today; will be no more.

Normally, many a person in Governor Palin’s position would already have accepted defeat.  They would have already come to the conclusion that they have no hope against such over-powering odds and opposition.  After all, “they” (the faceless ones who do this) have the printing presses and the television networks; and “they” are not shy about using their vast wealth and communications advantages to destroy all who oppose their agendas.

But, it appears that Governor Sarah Palin isn’t running away.  It appears that she is not going to go away without a fight.  It appears that this little lady with five children, one of who is autistic; from little town of Wasila, Alaska; with obviously very little money of her own; and no media machine behind her; has decided that she is not going to give up without a fight.  She apparently is going to try to stand up to her critics; and whether or not you agree with her politics; for the good of the democratic system, that has served us so well, she deserves our admiration and our prayers.  As does Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman who now has to face the music within his own party, for standing up for what he believes.

“Take unto you the whole armor of God,” the Apostle Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, “that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.  Above all,” Paul said, “taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” (Ephesians 6: 13-18)

Stand Up

Good people everywhere should stand up and demand that Governor Palin gets the chance to defend herself; that she not be judged in the “kangaroo court” of public opinion, without her side of the story being heard.   And, if the Democratic Party believes in what it calls “Fairness Doctrine”, then it should be the first to defend her.

Many on the right of the political spectrum say that it is un-statesman-like for Governor Palin to be fighting back.  Instead, they say, she should “turn the other cheek” and “be above” such attacks.  They say that every time that she responds, she is only giving her critics credibility.  They are wrong.  President George W. Bush took this approach and he was systematically destroyed by his political opponent’s character assassination machine.

Many Christians agree with this “turn the other cheek”, approach, on the basis that it is Biblical.  But is it?  Yes, it is in the Bible.  But, it is a very liberal interpretation of this passage of Scripture to say that Jesus is saying that we should not stand up for our beliefs; that we should cower down to evil.  In support of this, see what Jesus did when He saw what the money-changers were doing in the temple.  He did not passively accept what they were doing?  He “went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves.” (Matthew 21: 12)  He physically drove them out.

In the parable of the talents, we see also the story of the man who wasted his talent.  Now, did Jesus pamper this man; did He send him for rehabilitation?  No, He said: “Cast ye the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness.” (Matthew 25: 30)

Why was He so callous, you ask?  Why did He act this way?  Because, as Jesus explains at the end of this parable, then “there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”.  It will not happen otherwise.

You see, there will be no remorse among the perpetrators of this dirty political practice until there is a political price to pay.  For change to occur there must be sacrifice. “This kind cannot be cast out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17: 21)  “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.” Hebrews 9: 16) This is classical Christian doctrine; it is at the heart of the need to be “born again”.

Unfortunately, the character assassins did not pay at the recent US presidential elections; they were not asked to sacrifice; instead they were rewarded by the electorate with more power.  Their victim paid dearly and it will take many years for history to restore his image; and it is a sad day for the world if this is the best example of: “love thy neighbor as thyself”.

But Bush was a warmonger, many will say.  That is an emotional, political opinion that has no place in serious discussion among Christians and good people everywhere.  The people of the United States and all that they stand for were premeditatedly attacked and challenged on 9/11/2001 and President George W. Bush was sworn to act.  It was his sworn duty to act.  As the leader of the Free World, and a Christian who swore an oath, he had no choice.  Had he not acted in such an aggressive way, he would have almost certainly been impeached as a coward.  His enemies know this; this is why they put him into such a no-win situation.
The question then becomes: did he act in the right way?  Democrats say he should have focused on Afghanistan and not Iraq.  Well, now they have the chance to prove their theory; but that is all it is; their theory.  The Russians before them thought that they could win a war in Afghanistan, but failed miserably at an incredible cost.

Bush should have found another way, you say.  Which way, short of surrender, could he have chosen?  The United Nations would not act.  His opponents in the Congress have shown quite clearly that they were going to oppose anything that he did.  Unfortunately, the reality is that, once the attack came on 9/11/2001, he had no choice, as President elect Obama will discover, if, heaven-forbid, he is put in the same situation.
