Protect Freedom

Tuesday 27 Jan 2009

One of the worst things about the wisdom of old age is that you know too much.  When you reach 60 years of age in this world, you’ve been through a lot; you’ve heard a lot of empty promises that amounted to very little; you’ve seen a lot of failed attempts to change the world; you’ve met a lot of tricksters.  In times like these, this isn’t the best state of mind to be in, as we have virtually no option but to sit by and watch yet another group of bright young faces make promises that they ought to know; and certainly the world ought to know; they can’t keep, and won’t work.  Still, we keep bashing our heads against the wall; believing in the unbelievable; as we fall deeper and deeper into the bottomless pit, as if somehow, by some unknown wizardry, the basic law of life will change and let us get away with such foolishness.

The truth is however, it won’t.  God’s governing law of action and reaction; supply and demand, does not change.  “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13: 8) In God law, there “is no variableness, neither shadow of turning;” (James 1: 17) there is no change.  “With what measure you mete, it will be measured unto you.” (Matthew 7: 2)  It's a natural law that is cast in stone.

The Challenge We Face

In this light, with personal debt ballooning all over the world, and business credit drying up, Americans, Brits, and Australians are now being asked to allow their Government to spend more of their money for them; to allow government to shovel more of the people’s hard-earned capital that they need for their businesses, into the raging fire of government.

In Australia, government interference and its lack of faith in the people and the free enterprise system has almost totally undermined small business confidence.  Only the smallness of the Australian population relative to the country’s incredible wealth, saves them.  Otherwise, like Britain, Australia would also be teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

In the US, Americans are being asked to fund the greatest ever expansion of government interference in the free enterprise system.  The amount of “Stimulus Package #2” has yet to be decided, but it will almost certainly take the total amount of US government “investment” in the economy well over $1 Trillion in a matter of months, for very little result.  Certainly stock market investors are not voting for the package with their investment dollars.

What can we do?

As the US congress steamrolls forward to authorize this massive spending bill that even they are now saying will not deliver results “for some time”, many Americans and others around the world are afraid that the package will not only not work but that it will instead cause irreparable damage to the free enterprise system.  They fear that after this level of government “interference”, we may never again be able to return to the free enterprise world that gave us the historic levels of living that we enjoyed in the 50 years leading up to this disaster.

In this light, former Clinton Administration advisor Dick Morris has proposed that the Republicans in the US congress should, at least, propose a Free Enterprise Protection Act in return for their “support” of this massive spending bill that they cannot prevent from being railroaded through the Congress by the Democrat majority.  If only we had such protection for free enterprise, that had teeth, there would be a lot more reason to have hope in these times.
