Australia- The Australian Christian Lobby today backed calls by Family First Senator Steve Fielding for action to enforce laws aimed at protecting children from pornography.

“The damage to a child’s development from exposure to X and R rated material is well documented which is why Australia has had long-standing laws about the classification, sale and packaging arrangements of such material,” ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said today.

“Revelations in Senate Estimates yesterday that kids were being exposed to harmful material because of inadequate policing of the porn industry’s compliance with Australian law showed that yet again Australia was failing to act in the best interests of children.

“Exposure of children to pornography is not just a problem for indigenous communities. We must ensure laws protecting all Australian children are enforced,” Mr Wallace said.

“We have seen examples in recent times where child advocates have had to go to extraordinary lengths to have illegal material withdrawn from sale in shops and service stations because of the inability of the Classification Board to do its job.

“The Classification Review Board needs to be far more proactive and changes need to be made to policing arrangements to ensure the porn industry complies with the law.”

Mr Wallace said the Rudd Government’s efforts aimed at providing ISP-level filtering to Australian families would be another step forward in protecting children from the harms of pornography.
